General Training A · Writing Task 2
Consider the view that children have too much free time and should use more of it for school work. The task asks how you think children should spend their free time. Answer that question with a clear position rather than discussing education in general.
Practice target: 250+ words in about 40 minutes.
Open the task and write your response
Plan your response
- Decide what balance you support between further study and other activities. State the position in the introduction and make its meaning concrete.
- Develop a reason for your preferred use of free time, such as physical activity, creative interests or time with friends. Explain how the activity could benefit children.
- Address the argument for extra school work fairly. Consider when additional study may be useful and how your position responds to that need.
- Keep examples focused on the argument and finish with a conclusion consistent with your introduction. Develop at least 250 words through reasons and examples, rather than a list of activities.
Planning example
One position could support a mix of manageable homework and freely chosen activities. A body paragraph could explain how sport or shared play develops habits that extra academic exercises do not practise in the same way; another could explain when targeted revision is helpful.
This is original planning guidance, not a full sample answer or a promised band score. Compare any supplied sample critically and check it against the task requirements.
