Wilderness Tourism IELTS Reading Answers — Adapted Review

Book 5 Reading Test 4 · Passage 1 · Questions 1–13

This guide reviews the adapted questions on this website. Wording and answers can differ from the original paper.

The passage weighs the appeal of tourism in remote regions against effects on fragile environments and traditional communities. Its final examples show ways communities can retain more control over income and economic activity. Benefits and costs are discussed together rather than as a simple verdict for or against tourism.

Question types: Heading selection, Yes / No / Not Given and one-word completion

How to approach this passage

  1. For the first three headings, identify the central purpose of each section: why tourism expands, what it disrupts and how communities can respond.
  2. Keep the financial cost of starting tourism separate from its ecological or cultural costs. A low initial investment does not mean there are no consequences.
  3. Watch statements that extend a limited observation. Seasonal work does not establish that tourism operates throughout the year, and a decline in food production does not prove it has disappeared completely.
  4. For the final table, each gap allows only one word. Question 10 asks for the product cheese; Question 11 accepts tourism, tourist or tour before businesses. Keep each product or activity with its own community.

Worked review example

Adapted Question 12 asks which profitable businesses were established by the Acoma and San Ildefonso pueblos. Pottery fits the supplied example and the one-word limit. The community names are locating clues, not part of the answer.

Common mistake to avoid

Do not confuse different communities' examples. A successful activity in one region cannot be transferred to another row of the table.
