Gap Year Work or Travel — IELTS Writing Task 2 Plan

Book 5 Academic Writing Test 2 · Task 2

Original planning guidance for the supplied practice prompt. The example is illustrative; it is not a full model answer or a rated response.

The task asks you to discuss advantages and disadvantages of working or travelling for a year between high school and university. Keep the timing and the choices specific: this is a year before higher education, rather than a general essay about holidays or employment.

Practice target: 250+ words, about 40 minutes.

How to approach this task

  1. Choose two or three advantages you can explain, such as practical experience, greater independence or a clearer study choice. Show how a year of work or travel could produce the benefit rather than just listing positive qualities.
  2. Develop disadvantages with the same care. Possible issues include cost, loss of study routines or delaying graduation; explain when and why the issue could matter for a young person.
  3. Use focused examples and distinguish working from travelling where relevant. Paid work might help fund later study, whereas extended travel might require savings. Neither outcome applies automatically to everyone.
  4. Organise the response into an introduction, benefits, drawbacks and a conclusion that weighs them. An advantages-and-disadvantages task needs both sides, even if your final assessment favours one.

Planning example

One benefit paragraph could explain how temporary work exposes a student to workplace responsibilities and helps them choose a university subject. A drawback paragraph could examine how an unstructured year makes returning to regular academic work harder. The causal explanation makes each point relevant.

Common mistake to avoid

Do not turn the response into advice about taking a holiday after university. Keep the discussion tied to the transition from high school to university and to a year spent working or travelling.
