Book 5 Academic Writing Test 2 · Task 1
Original planning guidance for the supplied practice prompt. The example is illustrative; it is not a full model answer or a rated response.
The charts compare career and personal-interest reasons for studying across five age groups, alongside the support students receive from employers. The practice file uses approximate supplied values in a combined redraw. Consult the original two charts for exact figures and presentation.
Practice target: 150+ words, about 20 minutes.
How to approach this task
- Identify the age groups and the two measures before writing. Reasons for studying and employer support describe different aspects of the students' experience; they should not be added into one total.
- Plan an overview around the broad age-related contrast: career motivation becomes less prominent in the supplied data while interest becomes more prominent. Employer support follows its own pattern rather than the same steady trend.
- Use one detail paragraph to compare career and interest across the age groups, noting where the two motivations are similar. Use another to describe employer support and compare the youngest, middle and oldest groups.
- Treat the supplied percentages as estimates. Do not invent precise values between age categories or infer that ageing caused an individual's motivation to change: the charts compare groups, not the same people over time.
Planning example
A workable structure is introduction, overview, reasons-for-study comparisons and employer-support comparisons. This keeps the two original chart subjects distinct even when practising with the supplied combined redraw.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not call these full-time and part-time enrolment charts or male-versus-female comparisons. The categories are age, motivation and employer support.
