Can a mechanical engineering graduate apply?
Some relevant programmes consider mechanical engineering backgrounds, but admission depends on the individual academic requirements. A blanket answer based only on your BTech title is not enough. Begin with your transcript, detailed module descriptions and any thesis or independent academic work.
Two programmes worth investigating
| Programme | What the official page establishes | Your next check |
|---|---|---|
| KIT: Computational and Data Science MSc | Mechanical engineering is among the listed degree backgrounds, with specified academic credit requirements | Map mathematics, computing, engineering and thesis credits |
| TU Hamburg: Computational Methods and Machine Learning in Engineering | The programme is aimed at engineering graduates, including mechanical engineers | Review the programme-specific admissions requirements and your mechanics, mathematics and programming preparation |
Why the transcript matters
KIT’s published requirements include a minimum 180-credit degree, a thesis or comparable academic paper of at least 6 ECTS, and 20 ECTS in fundamental mathematics. It also specifies 64 ECTS across three subject areas: 40 in one area and at least 12 in each remaining area. The areas cover applied mathematics, computer science and an appropriate science, engineering or economics profile.
KIT states that work experience and personal references are not considered for these academic requirements. Do not treat employment or a short certificate as a substitute for missing required credits.
Prepare an academic mapping
- Collect your semester-wise transcript and university module syllabi.
- List mathematics, numerical methods, computing and engineering subjects separately.
- Record credits, learning outcomes and evidence of academic projects.
- Compare the evidence with each programme’s official requirements.
- Ask the admissions office about unclear equivalence; do not convert Indian credits into ECTS by guessing.
An engineering-focused computational or machine learning degree may connect more directly with your previous study than a computer science degree requiring extensive prior computing. That is a shortlist strategy, not an assurance of admission.
Check teaching language, application deadlines and total costs for each institution. Public-university status alone does not establish that a programme is tuition-free for your circumstances.
A hypothetical prerequisite gap
Suppose a mechanical engineering applicant can document substantial mechanics and mathematics, but cannot establish the computing preparation requested by a programme. The useful next step is to clarify which assessed modules count. A strong overall grade does not answer that subject-specific question.
Keep the evidence mapped to the transcript eligibility worksheet. Record unresolved equivalence as unclear, rather than labelling the applicant admitted or rejected.
Choose a direction for the project
A project involving physical systems, simulation or engineering optimisation may connect more directly to previous study than an unrelated software specialism. Examine the project and compulsory learning with the module comparison method. This is a fit assessment, not a claim that every engineering course has an industry placement.
If you widen the country shortlist
Use the UK Data Science and AI comparison to explore a different curriculum structure, but recheck entry requirements from the beginning. Requirements from a German course cannot be transferred to a UK course.
Before describing an option as affordable, complete the whole-degree cost worksheet using the exact tuition category, course duration and living budget.

An additional route for applicants with professional experience
The full-time analytics course shortlist adds a full-time, campus-based programme combining technical methods and business decisions. It has a professional-experience requirement and tuition fees. Treat it separately from consecutive academic programmes such as the earlier examples.
Fresh graduate versus employed engineer: a different first check
A fresh graduate should first check whether compulsory experience is met. An employed engineer should also document the duration and nature of employment, but still map the academic requirements. Neither a job title nor a mechanical engineering degree establishes all the required subject credits.
Prepare a table with original university credits, course hours, assessment, syllabus topics and source documents. Ask how the programme evaluates your credit system. Record an unresolved equivalence as a question, rather than converting it into a confident eligible/ineligible verdict.
Do not merge every German course into one admissions rule
Check the exact programme for English evidence, additional tests, APS timing, application channel and the intended intake. Our RWTH reference records its specific requirements. Rules from that professional programme cannot be transferred to KIT, TU Hamburg or another degree. Likewise, a public university name does not determine the tuition of every programme it awards.
Use the eligibility worksheet and funding worksheet together before selecting a route.
